Key West Fishing

Fish Check - I got home from a world class deep sea fishing experience with Capt. Steve and Fish Check charters. I've hired off shore Key West Fishing Charters a few times in years past and requested that we try to target sailfish and have come up dry every time. It was a bit frustrating seeing the other charter boats come in flying the sailfish flags and not having any luck. I realize as much as the next guy that we're talking about fishing here, but the angler you hire to take you out for the day has a lot to do with how successful you are. Last year after a full day of fishing and only catching a couple of small dolphin and a barracuda, I walked down the dock at the marina and started talking to captains and asked how they were doing. I ran into the guy at the #1 slip and figured he must have either been there forever or really knew what he was doing. Turns out it was both. I had already made reservations for my next vacation. The hotel was booked and I was ready to find someone that could put me on the sails. After talking to Steve for a little while I booked a full day charter with him. When I arrived he remembered me from last year and said he was going to do everything he could to catch my dream sailfish. Deep sea fishing can be slow and dull if you're out with guys that don't really love what they're doing. Steve and his mate really worked hard to put me on sails, but they were having fun too. A lot of these old captains are a bit salty to say the least and you feel like you're almost bothering them by going out on their boat. Not these guys. They had fun and made jokes. We hooked up a Wahoo first which kicked my butt for 30 minutes. What a fast and strong fish. Steve herd the line scream and shouted out Wahoo! He knew exactly what we had. When we got the fish to the boat, Steve said this is a good sing for the sailfish. We weren't fishing more than 20 minutes before Steve yells out sail! It was like slow motion watching the long bill come out of the water and we were hooked up. Not only did I catch my first sailfish after several attempts with other charter boats, but before the full day was over, I had brought three of them to the boat. I guess I'm a seasoned veteran now. When it comes to deep sea fishing charters, go with an experienced captain and you'll increase your chances for success.
