Merlin
Guesthouse - A Little History and a Great Location
Whoever thought the humble beginnings of what is now known as the
Merlin
Guesthouse Inn would end as an updated and modern facility? After arriving
somewhat early, I was pleasantly surprised to find out my room was ready and
I could go ahead with an early check in, even though it was a little before 1 p.m. As
a history buff, it was a treat to learn the background of this wonderful
location. It seems the original building began as a rooming house for navy
personnel in the 1930s, but also housed a bordello and gambling
establishment during its lifetime.
Today, the Merlin Guesthouse has been lovingly restored with décor to match
the area. During the restoration additional buildings were added and the
property is now gated which gives the property, and me, a feeling of safety.
While I had a wonderful room overlooking the pool, I learned they also have
several "conch" style homes and a number of private cottages that offer
several different types of accommodations. Back to my room, I had my own
private balcony complete with table and umbrella. What a wonderful way to
spend a few relaxing moments.
The staff was more than helpful. As I was checking in I was greeted with a
smile, a large coupon selection, a number of recommendations of sites and
activities in the area and a wonderful resident cat named Jordon. The
location of the property was also a plus. Not only was the hotel a hop and
skip from lively Duval Street, the beach and Ernest Hemingway's Home were
also within walking distance, at about six blocks away. I really enjoyed the
closeness to Duval Street's live music, shops, bars, restaurants and the
galleries. While it was close to a lot of activity, it surprisingly quite.
One of the amenities the hotel offered was a pool-side continental
breakfast. It was great to get up and have breakfast by a sparkling pool
under a bright blue sky. While the guestrooms do not have telephones, I had
no problem using my cell phone or the wireless connection that was available
in the courtyard. I did find the parking a little tight but actually used my
car only once. The whole experience was a gem of history and activity.
